    Celebrating the fifth anniversary, the Prize has carried on the spirit of Nam June Paik by acknowledging artists who venture beyond the known horizon to discover the unknown through ceaseless experiments and innovative works. The prize winner, Blast Theory exploring socio-political aspects of technology, has captured the world’s attention through their works that have created new forms of performance and interactive art.

    The exhibition features contemporary artists’ thoughts and reflections on the rapidly changing technological environment. Since the Great Exhibition in 1851 at Crystal Palace, London, the rosy future promised by the state-driven technological development has brought about today’s fourth industrial revolution led by the internet and digital information technology. However, the belief that technological advance will open a new world for human beings has, in return, produced the fear that the very technology will also take away jobs from humans and even their identity .

    Imaginary Asia interrogates newly emergent approaches in contemporary art that deal with history. Collaborating with artists whose visions reinterpret or come to terms with varying historical changes in Asia on personal levels, Nam June Paik Art Center proposes to take a close look at the ways of mapping out Asian histories. This exhibition is not about ‘History’, namely records of the visitors, but ‘histories’-multifaceted documentations produced by each one of us, through subjective perspectives and embedded within the tangible textures of our lives.
