This institute is GyeongGi-do’s first professional excavatory organization. Established in 1999 to investigate, study, preserve, maintain, and use the province’s cultural heritage, the institute has excavated numerous historical sites. It also manages a range of heritage-related projects along with the Bukhansanseong Fortress Culture Project Team and GyeongGi-do Cultural Properties Protection Team.







Since its establishment in 1999, the GGCF has conducted 650 cases of investigations into heritage within the region while publishing 174 academic reports. These investigations have included academic excavations on national-designated cultural properties (e. g., Hoeamsa Temple site in Yangju, Godalsa Temple site in Yeoju, Namhansanseong Fortress, and Bukhansanseong Fortress) and GyeongGi-do-designated cultural properties (Mannyeonje irrigation facility in Hwaseong, the Samli site in Gwangju, the traditional government office site in Yangju, etc.) It also carried out rescue excavations for cultural properties buried in large-scale housing development areas (e. g., Yongin-Jukjeon, Namyangju-Hopyeong, Osan-Segyo, Paju-Unjeong, and Hyangnam-Hwaseong districts). The foundation has contributed to the restoration of the provincial history and culture and has developed programs and resources on cultural heritage.





The institute focuses on preservation and maintenance of cultural properties, such as regular investigation on cultural history, comprehensive reorganization plans, documentation projects, and building and monitoring. The Office of Preservation and Processing leads rapid preservation of cultural heritage in its original forms through the transfer and restoration of relics uncovered at excavation sites. It also seeks and implements scientific preservation and maintenance measures for artifacts found at excavation sites, GyeongGi-do-designated cultural properties and relics commissioned by local governments, excavation and/or exhibition organizations.






The institute contributes to a renewed recognition of Korea’s cultural heritage through its systematic operation of heritage utilization programs tailored to various audiences. The institute also offers a range of cultural activities for GyeongGi-do residents to enjoy through publishing and publicizing a map of one hundred key heritage sites in the province, operating field trips and hands-on programs aimed at experiencing various aspects of cultural heritage and conducting tours along fortress walls.





Bukhansanseong Fortress Culture Project Team has steadily implemented projects to study, restore, renovate, and utilize the fortress to better identify the historical and cultural meanings and value of the fortress. Every year, the team hosts academic symposiums and operates various education programs for the public. Recently, the culture team is focusing on adding the fortress to UNESCO’s World Heritage list with support from the province and the city of Goyang. Moreover, the team is developing a range of programs and cultural experiences so that the entire fortress can be enjoyed as a single multicultural venue.






This team is building a cultural property management system to prevent damage to cultural properties through daily maintenance, both regular and special monitoring, and minor repairs. Launched in 2013, this project has included daily maintenance of about 600 cultural properties in the province in partnership with the GyeongGi-do Cultural Heritage Section and the GyeongGi Institute of Cultural Properties. Specific maintenance jobs include weeding, snow removal, plumbing, and street cleaning. The team maintains a pleasant environment for visitors and prevents damage to cultural properties by quickly repairing damage to the building.
