M3 is a conversion and complex culture platform at Gyeonggi Sangsang Campus which is an experimental space and laboratory for creators and citizens. Through pilot projects in 2018, a variety of researches and experiments will be conducted such as M3_Curatorial Project, M3_Collaboration Project, M3_Open Platform, and M3_Network (linked to the Youth Festival).

The ‘Porosity Space’ is an urban architectural concept established by Walter Benjamin. He left Germany in 1924 and stayed in Naples, Italy, where he was inspired by the Mediterranean ‘non-borderness’ which is different from a modern city where the private and public spheres are separated.

In a nutshell, each space in an art museum has precisely defined function and purpose. An exhibition room is the space for exhibiting works, an archive room is the space for browsing archived materials, a café or a restaurant is the space for enjoying simple relaxation and leisure, an art shop is the space for selling exhibition catalogs, posters or designer products, and a conference hall is the place where various lectures and discussions take place.

However, M3 does not define anything. Since it is an undefined neutral space, it is empty but also has possibilities to be filled up. It is not determined to fill this neutral space with what. Including the multi-bunker, individual spaces within M3 can be freely modified as ‘module’ depends on the user’s intent.

To measure volume of a three-dimensional figure means to calculate how much space the figure takes in the three-dimensional place. The formula for calculating a cube with 1m side length is as above. Replace the small letter ‘m’ with a capital letter as following.

M3 is the formula for calculating a volume. However, it is not a formula for 1 calculating how much space does air, water, or sand takes, but a formula for calculating how much imagination of users can be expanded through M3.


M3 is a space that is infinitely expanded or amplified according to the user’s imagination. Use M3 and freely substitute your imagination with the variable χ.

1. M3_Curatorial Project
This project is to experiment the building and space of M3 as materials for project planning and designing. It is to explore and experiment various possibilities such as commission projects, show cases, pop-up stores, experimental workshop performances, exhibitions and so on.

2. M3_Collaboration Project
We will promote and experiment collaborative projects, multi-genre or multi-media, interdisciplinary art producers or groups to build a unique identity and distinctiveness of M3. We will maximize space efficiency by freely making use of M3 and Sangsang Campus, and share the results in various forms such as show cases, performances, exhibitions, and education.

3. M3_Open Platform
This project is to offer citizens free access and use of inside and outside space of M3_Multi-bunker to create contents. Through this, we will explore the possibilities as an open platform where the imagination and creativity of citizen creators can be amplified..

4. M3_Network (Linked to the Youth Festival)
This program is to establish a platform for establishing and exchanging network of related domestic and overseas organizations through the planning and management of the M3 Convergence and Complex Conference. Instead of formal and rigid networking, we will plan and promote experimental networking and conferences in the form of parties and festivals.

The dark ground is permeated with water. The molecules of water have penetrated here and there as even they were not aware of going to where. Spring has come. I have waited the spring for so long and it has come to me already. It has brought the green in so deeply and now it would disappear in a flash.

Water will not stop. Spring will not be caught.

Come to me and leave. It is you that I will be embraced. The sky has been there always and it has painted differently each time. It calmly shook the world.

The <Spring and the Sky, MMM> performance is to celebrate the opening of M3, the new space at Gyeonggi Sangsang Space. This is an ‘audience moving type’ performance that the music can be heard differently depends on the space structure and the location of audience. There are eight difference spaces numbered from #0 to #7 throughout the building from the first floor to the rooftop. Gayageum players from G1 to G9 are in each space and they start the music of its own space when the audiences enter. In order to listen to the music, the audiences should follow minimum rules made by the space’s original nature. However, this depends on the free will of the audience.

With the imagining of M3’s past and its future role, we made this work hoping to be an open space where various opportunities coexist.

In honor of the UNESCO world culture and arts education week and in cooperation with the Gyeonggi Basic Culture Foundation, the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation’s Gyeonggi Arts & Culture Education Support Center will open the “G-CAFÉ Neul Kkum Maeul Festival” at the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum square and auditorium in Yongin. ‘G-CAFÉ’ is the abbreviation of “Gyeonggi-Cultural Art Education Festival” and is a place for people to gather and share stories about life and culture while being a brand name for the Gyeonggi Province education week. Taking the lead in offering the art and culture education of everyone’s dreams, the Neul Kkum Maeul Festival holds the 2018 education week event identity of a village concept for each period of life.

This year’s event will consist of eleven culture and art education program booths, performances by the Gyeonggi Provincial Theatre Company’s “The Happy Day of Maeng Jin-sa” of the Gyeonggi Arts Center, a busking performance by the band ‘Annyeong 384’, a flea market, and a variety of other programs. One greatly anticipated program is a special lecture by Professor Peck Cho (head of the HD Institute of Resilience and Positivity), co-author of the book Emotional Scrapper and Emotional Silver Spoon. This lecture, entitled “Ways to enjoy culture and art education in the home”, will offer ways to enjoy culture and art education for homes with children in elementary school. Those wanting to participate may do so by signing up in advance (for free) and all participants will be given a souvenir as a gift.

In line with the 5th GGCF Cultural Policy Forum on The 4th Industrial Revolution and Culture, this forum shares the cases of the ‘maker culture’ that have made our lives livelier than before thanks to the participation of smart citizens who lead the culture and progress of society. A maker refers to anyone who makes, including an inventor, artisan, artist, engineer, and someone who makes something as a hobby. The magazine Make: was first published in 2005 in the United States, and the Maker Faire was held so that makers from around the world could build solidarity with each other. In its early stage, they concentrated on “Do It Yourself”, but, as the maker movement has unfolded through the Internet and the fair, they started to pursue “Do It Together”, applying their maximum personal technique based on the knowledge that they have learned from one another. Thus, a maker is “someone who makes” that has emerged with the development of sharing knowledge and techniques, and “everyone except the experts in culture and art”.

Yu Man-seon, a researcher at the Gwacheon National Science Museum, the first speaker of the forum, will explain the maker culture focusing on the operation of the Infinite Imagination Room, a maker space and maker education program of the GNSM. The Infinite Imagination Room is a space that has been established in national science museums with the goal of nurturing talent in science through the spread of creative imagination and ideas. Yu Man-seon, a planner and manager of the Infinite Imagination Room and maker himself, will introduce the maker culture and movement from a scientific perspective, and the second speaker, Song Su-yeon, will share her thoughts on the maker culture from an artistic and cultural point of view. As a member of an artist group ‘unmake lab’, Song will explain why the maker culture is now a social issue, putting forward her own opinions, and will introduce the operation of maker spaces both home and abroad along with their changing processes. The last speaker, Jeong Hee, head of the Make Korea Team of Bloter And Media, will talk about maker media and fairs as examples of expanding maker culture. Jeong has also imported and planned the Maker Faire Seoul, an on-site event of Maker Media, the publisher of Make: since 2012. The speech will be followed by in-depth debates with the speakers on the maker culture in Korea, as well as the present and future of the maker culture of Gyeonggi Province. The debaters will be Choi Yun-sik, manager of cluster operation of the Gyeonggi Content Agency, Hwang Sun-ju, head of the Local Intermedia Team of the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation, Gang Tae-uk, senior researcher at the Korea Institue of Civil Engineering and Building Technology and maker, and Lee Mi-hwa, president of Imojeomo Domoso in Anyang.

The speeches and debates will be published in Cultural Policy Bulletin Vol.06, where you can also find the details about the Make Faire Bay Area 2018, one of the three major maker fairs to be held in San Mateo, California in the US. Cultural Policy Bulletin is a Korean-English quarterly that introduces the cultural policies of the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation, and is distributed to related domestic and overseas cultural institutes and foundations.
