Do Dream Small Museum 《Feeling, Thinking》

Period/ 2018.06.04(Mon) ~ 2018.07.13(Fri)
Venue/ 97, Dongducheon-ro, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do (Small Museum, Fashion Support Center)
Do Dream Small Museum prepared 《Feeling, Thinking》 as its second exhibition of 2018 for spectators to appreciate.

Ryu Hyun-suk, communicating through the arts.

Artist Ryu Hyun-suk, who wants spectators to freely appreciate her works, says that drawing is not a special duty but a part of her daily life. Her work which incorporates a date that approaches like a code and the traces of that day further includes both significant and petty incidents, weather and moods at that time. Reminiscing about her childhood and the day that the artist discovered a pencil eraser at her neighborhood shop and shouted, “This is it!”, the artist wrote a diary entry filled with details with an eraser, and she proceeded to write her worries about nature and life through drawings.

Furthermore, the artist mixes colors at random over transparent film to unfold the fun imagination of the question “Don’t you think there is a place like this somewhere in the universe?” Upon the artist’s meaningful comment, “Rather than showing what I know, I will answer only to the extent of what is asked,” we were able to look into the artist’s mind in wanting to relate instead of delivering a message through her works.

We invite you to Ryu Hyun-suk’s 《Feeling, Thinking》 which is filled with fun happenings.
Main Works
두드림 작은미술관 《느끼는 것, 생각하는 것》
《092412, 092612, 100512, 102112》 100*78cm, 80*80cm, Oil on canvas
The numbers of the art work represent the dates the pieces were completed, and the artist creating the images is not some special work but signifies everyday events like writing a diary. The artist does not guide spectators towards a specific direction in regard to her work but allows the audience to freely interpret them. Only, the colors mix with one another to create a subtle change, and the repetitive units come together to form harmony and create a rhythm.
두드림 작은미술관 《느끼는 것, 생각하는 것》
《062611, 070711, 072311, 110108, 070211, 071711》 30.5*30.5*8.8cm, Eraser on plexiglass
While reading an essay by philosopher Walter Benjamin that reminisced on his childhood, I too wanted to create a work that was linked to my own childhood. One day, I was loitering at a neighborhood dollar store, and when I discovered a colorful pencil eraser, I got goosebumps as I got the feeling ‘This is it.’ I liked stationery since I was a child and I spent a lot of time in stationery stores looking at the things they sold, but never did I think of using an eraser as material for my work. I’m thrilled to have discovered another use for erasers.
두드림 작은미술관 《느끼는 것, 생각하는 것》
《041515, 040415, 060815》 145.5*336cm, Oil on canvas
I wanted to visualize the complex, subtle and dramatic dispensation of nature and life through the subtle changes of colors. I hope that the work will become a space of meditation for spectators looking upon my work as well as a place of speculation and medication about nature, life or anything personal.

두드림 작은미술관 《느끼는 것, 생각하는 것》
《The Arcade 2》 56×56×146.3cm, Acrylic mirror & Eraser on plexiglass
By placing the eraser work designed with colorful erasers inserted onto the surface of the work into the mirror box, a space of infinite reflection that is like a room of mirrors will unfold. Taking a photo of spectators looking in will create a photographic portrait of a background similar to a kaleidoscope (or mandala monogram). When spectators take photographic portraits with their cellphones, the work will be made complete, and this will create sound communication between spectators and the artist.
두드림 작은미술관 《느끼는 것, 생각하는 것》
《In and out》 Various size (200*100cm for each film), Acrylics on PC film
This work was created with the decalcomania technique used over transparent polycarbonate film. The artist chose colors while thinking of beautiful nature, and the colors on the film mixed together to create amorphous forms. Don’t you think that nature that is like these films with a sense of ambiguity in its slippery surface and distinct texture exists somewhere in this world or in the universe?

The Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art will open the first exhibition of the Quantum Jump 2018 4 Artists Relay Show with by Kim Gemini. Artist Kim Gemini resided in a small-scale community for a fixed period to observe the daily happenings of people and through the exchange and study of local residents presented works consisting of archiving, publications and film. 《What Do Deer Eat?》 directly and indirectly projects the structure of relationship that forms a community through the food culture and form of existence of immigrants standing at a crossroads who departed their homelands for economic or political reasons and were forced to adapt to an unfamiliar environment. The artist, who exposes discourse of immigration from the most basic elements of life and joins it with residence and food intake as applicable to the food, clothing and shelter as needed for survival by man, also exhibits the journey of discovery through an installation of an archive-type objet that is linked to immigration and food culture.

‘Quantum Jump’ is a year-round exhibition formed by cooperation between the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art and the Gyeonggi Creation Center to introduce new ventures of young artists. This year’s 《Quantum Jump 2018 4 Artists Relay Show》 will exhibit works by Kim Gemini who speaks of the identities of individuals and groups through a community network and research about modes of particular acts in daily life, Hong Jang-oh who visualizes the universe of the unknown, a subject of aesthetics, through combinations of unpredictable forms, Lee Ji-yeon who created a net with articles that are waste from currency to explore the world’s cyclical network and fluid values, and Kang Joo-ri who recreates abnormal forms caused by changes of plants and artificial environmental changes as a result of natural selection and environmental adaptation with pen drawing. Pieces of work that were completed during the artists’ stay at the Gyeonggi Creation Center will be exhibited on relay at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art Project Gallery from July 4 to November 11.

Gyeonggi MoMA’s DDCA—Dongducheon Public Art Project

Period/ 2018.06.05(Tue) ~ 2018.07.12(Thu)
Venue/ Dongducheon Public Art Project
In 2018, Dongducheon City (Mayor Oh Se-chang) and Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (Director Choi Eunju) are preparing street art (graffiti) for structures in the special tourist zone, Bosang-dong, Dongducheon City. In particular, this project creates works on railroad bridge piers, for the first time in the country. They have become good examples of turning the gray concrete bridge posts into wonderful urban art. Dongducheon Public Art Project is a collaboration between the City and the Gyeonggi MoMA, which started in 2015 with Dongducheon K-Rock Village Project and has been producing results for four years. At Bosan-dong, you can appreciate the artwork on the street created by 18 artists from Korea, Thailand, Russia, France, Italy, and Spain for the next four years, and at the end of October, there will be Dongducheon Halloween Festival where you will be able to experience various cultural events showing street art.

Dongducheon Public Art Project for Bosan-dong street art presents environmental art that has not frequently been tried so far, using railroad bridge piers as the canvas. The gray concrete pillars located throughout the city give a cold impression, but the change of the piers near Bosan Station are expected to realize a new form of street art.
Project Focus
▶ 2018 Gyeonggi MoMA Public Art Project
A new concept project for city renovation to revitalize the city through the artwork of the public art project of Gyeonggi MoMA at the old streets and environment of the special tourist zone near Bosan Station in Dongducheon City

▶ Five-year Public Art Project of Dongducheon City
Dongducheon City has been running a city environment project on the streets near Bosan Station for four years now, since it started the Dongducheon Public Art Project in December 2015. Particularly, the city planned the environmental works using the railroad bridge piers around Bosan Station, making the space a gallery where people can appreciate various contemporary art pieces, including graffiti that was first introduced in the 1980s in Korea and graffiti of the present.

▶ Community Renovation Project through Works of European Graffiti Artists
The graffiti art street, the one and only in the country, where people can appreciate various cultures and artwork through the street environmental art created by five European artists from three countries (France, Spain, and Italy)

▶ Transformation of Special Tourist Zone near Bosan Station in Dongducheon
Showing the possibility of expansion of 21st-century public art on the streets near Bosan Station and trying to build a public art domain unique to Dongducheon through art in life

Unofficial Discoursers – 2018 GCC Preview Exhibition

Period/ 2018.04.26(Thu) ~ 2018.06.24(Sun)
Venue/ GCC Permanent Exhibition Space
The Gyeonggi Creation Center of the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation holds Unofficial Discoursers, the 2018 GCC Preview Exhibition, from April 26 (Thu) through June 24 (Sun) at the GCC Permanent Exhibition Space and Project Exhibition Space. The opening reception commences at 4 PM April 25 (Wed) at the GCC Art Café.

The Gyeonggi Creation Center has offered an international and local Residency Program of the largest scale in Korea, where artists from home and abroad have been supported in their creative work and study. This year, it has selected artists who have worked in various fields and expressed the world and life through their artwork with their original attitudes and perspectives on social, historical, and cultural issues, in order to provide the artists with more intensive residency programs according to the content. Unofficial Discoursers, the 2018 GCC Preview Exhibition, will be the venue for introducing 20 new resident artists in 2018 with their various works including paintings, videos, performances, photos, sound, installations, ceramic works, and sculptures.

Unofficial Discoursers, the title of the exhibition, refers to the subject which encompasses all of the actions that an artist takes in order to gain a fundamental individuality, a unique way of existence for an artwork, and all of the relationships resulting from those actions. Through these actions, an artist resists the interpretations based on social convention, looks for the dominant meanings of accidents, and creates uncommon places by ceaselessly creating gaps and rifts in order to not remain located in the existing system of knowledge or ideas. Along the way, the artists refuse to lose their inner distinction from others, readily befriending the solitude and loneliness so as to remain true to their individual particularity and infinitely varying possibilities. In the contemporary art field where dynamic changes are incessantly created, the artists who have maintained their own way to communicate and their own artistic practices pose meaningful questions through their works of art.

With the Preview Exhibition at the GCC as a starting point, the artists anticipate a strengthening of their individual identity as they take part in various exhibitions, mentoring, lectures, and workshops as part of the residency program, creating a network with each other and forming a creative and artistic synergy.

Lobby Gallery Us, Coexisting

Period/ 2018.04.16(Mon) ~ 2018.06.15(Fri)
Venue/ GGCF Lobby Gallery
Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation is holding the special exhibition Us, Coexisting at the Lobby Gallery from April 16 to June 15, 2018. At Us, Coexisting, you can view the ways to coexist with others in everyday life through the works of Byun Kyung Soo, Yang Seung-won, Woosung Lee, and Jang Li La. The distinctive works of the four artists now on display at the Lobby Gallery compose an exhibition by forming the background for each other or relying on and coexisting with each other. The scene epitomizes the process of forming a community. We often try to accept and respect the ‘difference’ in relationships with others, but it is easier said than done. In our complex society where members are entangled with each other, we adjust our ways to coexist with others through face-to-face meetings and communication. You would find the chance to pay attention to your neighbors and communicate with them by adopting the sophisticated eyes of the artists, with which you could perceive the tension, the conflict, and the changes and signs during the process of communication between the ideal and the reality, the individual and the society, an individual and another individual, and the artwork and the audience.

《Gyeonggi 1000 Years Meet the Media, in Spring》 Special Exhibition Commemorating the 2018 Gyeonggi Millennium

Period/ 2018.04.18(Wed) ~ 2018.06.24(Sun)
Venue/ Gyeonggi Provincial Museum
At Gyeonggi 1000 Years Meet the Media, in Spring, you can enjoy the medley of beautiful collections of the museum and modern media art. Today, the ways of expressing cultural properties have become more diversified as more people are interested in media.

Celebrating the 1,000th anniversary of the naming of Gyeonggi, the exhibition mainly shows the works of modern media artists who reinterpreted the cultural properties of Gyeonggi Province through their own lens. Visitors are encouraged to learn about the cultural assets and to reflect on their value.

Although spacial limitations had made it difficult to deliver the full 1,000-year history of Gyeonggi, we carefully selected those relics which would effectively embody the theme of the exhibition in order to transfer the story about the lives of those who have lived in Gyeonggi.

We hope that our cultural properties coinciding with media will open the road for one fine spring day in Gyeonggi Province, a region located in the middle of the Korean peninsula and where you can find lavish cultural heritage.
